MP calls for immediate enforcement of death penalty
The National, Monday September 23rd, 2013
GAZELLE MP Malakai Tabar has called for the immediate enforcement of the death penalty as a deterrent to serious crimes.
Tabar said in recent times there had been a sharp rise in violent crimes with the use of high-powered guns and other weapons, resulting in the death of many defenseless and innocent people.
“Good law-abiding citizens as well as tourists from other countries visiting Papua New Guinea have been subjected to some of the worst forms of crimes,” he said.
“Why should such gun-trotting and shameless cowards unjustly take away live of others for no apparent reasons?
“Why should the majority of peace-loving citizens constantly live in fear and be at the mercy of few trigger-happy and senseless murderers?
“It is time PNG moved decisively by taking the most appropriate and resolute action to enforce the death penalty.
“No one has any right to take someone else’s life. Those who take other people’s lives do not deserve to be spared their lives,” Tabar said.
“Whether it is hanging, firing squad, electric chair or lethal injection, the relevant state agencies should speed up the process so that death penalty is implemented.”
He said the Government should stop procrastinating over the death penalty and move swiftly to enforce the law.
