WEWAK MP Jim Simatab has committed K5,000 towards the opening of a new Seventh-Day Adventist church hall on Wei island, East Sepik, later this year.
The hall, which is nearing completion, was built by the villagers at a cost of K35,000 raised from the sale of fish.
Fishing is their only source of income as the island is rocky, making farming almost impossible for the 200 people who live there.
Simatab praised the islanders for taking the initiative to build the church hall under trying circumstances, especially as they had nothing except fish to meet all immediate household needs, pay school fees and buy medicine but could still contribute to build the church.
