A TEAM of Defence Force engineers has built a new road for villagers in Jimi, Jiwaka, whose only access road was recently damaged by a landslide.

Jimi MP Mai Dop engaged the team of military engineers who managed to complete connecting the road last week.

The same team will carry out the upgrading of the road from Tabibuga station to Banz.

The landslide last February happened at the border of North Waghi and Jimi and washed away a 20-meter portion of the road.

The washed away road completely  cut off access by the people of Tabubuga, Kol, Ambualla and Koinambe travelling to Mt Hagen, Banz or Minj.

Jimi district administrator Mathew Kuraiwae said the soldiers had done a quality job.

Kuraiwae said Jimi was prone to natural disasters.

“We are facing challenges with natural disasters happening all the time,’’ he said.

He said district services improvement programme funds were used for roads.

“We are now focusing on roads but have other areas to look into,” he said.

“Thus we need partnership with the National Disaster Office, Department of works and Governor William Tongamp.”

Kuraiwae said Jimi is a remote electorate and it needed greater attention for services.
