MP gripes about lack of water in his district
The National, Wednesday February 18th, 2015
NAWAEB MP Gisuwat Siniwin says parts of his district encroaching into neighbouring Lae do not receive water services.
He told Parliament that one-quarter of the population of Lae was from Nawaeb and did not have proper water supplies in areas such as Kamkumung, Malahang Back Road, Busu River, Bumayong, Boinamo Pit and other settlements.
“We are living in the 21st century but my people in the city do not have water supply,” Siniwin said.
He asked State Enterprises Minister Ben Micah if there were plans to help his Nawaeb people living in Lae, and if there were plans by his department to have water supplied to his people, who were “drinking water from 200-litre rusty drums”.
“Water is a very-essential human need, In fact it is a basic need together with housing, clothing, and food. It’s plentiful in our country, it’s available from many rivers and streams, spring water, even rain water which pours down every day in our tropical country.
“Unfortunately, this plentiful water is not available to our people, in terms of its purity, its hygiene.
“Many diseases such as dysentery, and many others, are spread because our people do not have access to clean, safe water.”
