WEWAK MP Jim Simatab plans to build a town at Tumarau in the Turubu Local Level Government.
Simatab, the Correctional Service Minister, told landowners at the Tumarau sub-health centre that Wewak town was becoming densely populated with no land left to develop.
He said the district was looking at another site to build a growth centre. “The district has started investing in an all-weather road from Mandi on the coast to Tumarau which will connect the main Angoram highway,” he said.
“We’ve already spent K1.9 million and will continue to fund this road. The district will provide K500,000 for the Angoram Road because three quarters of the road is used by our people. Electricity will be hooked up as soon as we develop this place.
“We will be shifting the Turubu LLG headquarters here, prepare for the start of the Turubu High School and build a rural lock-up and police station.
“We expect work to start this year and call for the landowners’ cooperation and support to achieve this vision,” Simatab said. He urged the people to allow their land to be bought or leased by the government for development.
Simatab said the land compensation claim culture had hindered service delivery in the country.
Turubu LLG president David Kausik and other landowning group representatives fully supported the idea.
