MADANG Governor Jim Kas, pictured, has launched an environment report for the sustainable use of natural resources.

The report, titled Madang Sustainable Development: A Ridges-to-Reefs Gaps and Priority Analysis, identifies the conservation gaps and priorities in promoting the sustainable use of its natural resources.

Madang is home to the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone, Ramu nickel and Marengo mines and logging projects.

The report guides and balances economic development with the conservation and need of natural resource by stakeholders.

Kas committed K1.5 million to support the programme in the province. He said a memorandum of understanding signed last year between the Nature Conservation and the provincial government’s planning department would be reviewed and extended for a further three years.

“Technical capacity constraint is an ongoing concern within the provincial administration and in the basis of your excellent performance in the

implementation of this project, the Madang provincial government will review and extend the collaborative partnership arrangement for another three years,” Kas said.

The provincial government allocated K400,000 under the Public Private Partnership agreement signed in May 2013 to initiate the process.

Kas, as chairman of the Momase Governor’s Council, promises to see that the council supports all Momase provinces in the  replication of the Madang Sustainable Development Gap Analysis Project.
