WEWAK MP Jim Simatab has urged parents to save money for their children’s tertiary education while they are still at school.

He said parents today did not have to pay for tuition fees in school because of the Government’s free education policy. Simatab said the Government was paying fees for students from elementary to Grade 12.

“After Grade 12, it is the parents’ responsibility to pay for their children’s education,” he said.

He was speaking at the graduation ceremonies for Grades 10 and 12 at Bamasaka and Mercy Secondary schools in Wewak, East Sepik, last Friday.

Bamasaka is located east of Wewak near Brandi Secondary School. It is a private school. The girls’ high school at Yarapos is run by Mercy Sisters.

Simatab was one of the first students to graduate from the school in Grade 3 in 1963. The school has developed in the past 50 years to be the best in the province.

He shared his experiences on how hard it was in his days to search for quality education.

He encouraged parents and students to take advantage of the windows of opportunities available today to enhance learning.

Simatab said Wewak district would improve infrastructure at all high schools in the district to cater for the increasing Grade 9 enrollments.

It will not support students at universities and other tertiary institutions like what other MPs are doing, he said.
