MP seeking explanation
BOGIA MP Robert Naguri has called on the Deputy Prime Minister Davis Steven to explain why village court officials in his electorate are still without pay.
“In the August 2019 session of Parliament, I was assured that the village courts in my district will be taken care of as soon as I presented the list of all those who are not on the Government payroll,” Naguri said.
“To date, my hardworking village court magistrates, peace officers, clerks and land mediators are still without pay.
“I know most of the members of Parliament are experiencing this in their districts as well.”
Steven, who is also the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, said the process of listing all village court officials in 2018 revealed that there was not sufficient funding over the last 10 years.
“We were able to set up a database and properly list all village court officials in the country but in that process we found that there had been a budget shortfall.”
