NAWAEB MP Kennedy Wenge has thrown his support in developing small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in rural areas.
The support targeted cooperative society groups involved in coffee production, chicken farming and other small businesses in the Morobe district.
Six cooperative societies received K10,000 each at Hobu, Nabak local level government, given towards supporting their work in the SMEs
Wenge said the support given by the district authority under his leadership was to help those cooperative societies strengthen their establishments of in the communities.
He told the people of Nabak that the support given should go towards reviving those cooperatives that had gone dormant and those still existing should be further boosted to bring services to the people.
“The main cash crops here are coffee and cocoa,” he said.
“Those cooperatives that involved in this cash crops should now start to buy produce from local farmers.”
Wenge said the support also meant that local farmers needed to sell their produce to local buyers.
“When you sell your produce to local buyers, you grow those SMEs and that brings in money back to the district, LLG and wards which you will benefit from,” he said.
He said the district authority would only support organised groups such as cooperative societies and not individuals in the next two years.
Wenge said all cooperative groups in Nawaeb would benefit from the support programme and would receive K10,000 each.
He urged the groups to use the money wisely for the intended purposes.
Wenge said the people of Nawaeb needed to form cooperative groups to participate in and receive the benefits of the programme as the district would focus its support on SME activities.
