MP supports women in business

THE first lot of women’s group executives in Eastern Highlands have received chicks, stock feed and materials from Governor Julie Soso’s office last Thursday to begin poultry projects.
President of Eastern Highlands Provincial Council of Women Jenny Gunere said over the next few days all executive members of the provincial, district, LLG and ward women’s councils would each receive a box of broiler chicks, two bags of broiler starters, four bags of broiler finishers, two drinkers and one bottle of Nilverm de-wormer.
Gunere said Governor Soso provided K100,000 to support the executives of the women’s council in recognition and appreciation for their voluntary commitment in supporting the work of women in Eastern Highlands. She said executive members in every district, LLG and ward women’s group would receive their share of supplies to start a chicken project to generate additional incomes for their families.
Gunere said last Thursday’s delivery from FM Hardware in Goroka was the first; more deliveries would be made for women executives in the eight districts.
“This is a one-off recognition and appreciation for the voluntary efforts of the executives; they do not receive any payment for the work they do to empower women for many years. I thank Governor Soso for supporting us. This initiative will empower women leaders at all levels to achieve sustainable economic empowerment,” Gunere said. One of the recipients Sharon Soto from the Ungai-Bena Womens Council said they have been working very hard over the years taking up women and family issues but had never been recognised until now.
