MP urged to stop giving cash

THE people in the Kagua-Erave electorate in Southern Highlands have called on local MP James Lagea to bring in tangible developments.
The people said they did not want cash handouts but services that would last for a long time.
They called on Lagea to stop giving cash handouts because they did not help them in the long run.
They said this after learning Lagea had allegedly given money to people in other districts
Spokesperson Ben Magani from Aiya tribe in the Kagua-Erave electorate, alleged that since Lagea got into parliament he had not delivered much.
He said last week Lagea allegedly gave K100,000 to the people of Tiri village, in the Ialibu-Pangia electorate, and committed another K50,000 to the people of Imbongu electorate.
Magani said that K150,000 was a waste of public funds because the money was for the people of Kagua-Erave.
He said the district needed such money to maintain its feeder roads, schools and health services.
He said the people of Ialibu-Pangia and Imbonggu had their own MPs to look after them.
Magani said the people wanted to know whether the money given and committed came out from the MP’s pocket or from district funds.
He said if the money allegedly given came from the district support improvement programme then they wanted an explanation from Lagea.
He said they had not seen any tangible developments and did not know why Lagea decided to spend the money outside the district.
Magani claimed some schools, youth and women’s groups wrote to Lagea seeking help but their requests had been ignored.
He claimed that infrastructure in the district had gradually deteriorated and had fallen apart.
He said if their leaders had any concern for their people, they would step in and address some of these problems.
Magani said the people gave mandate to their leaders to deliver goods and services but were unhappy at being let down.
He called on Lagea to redirect his spending and focus on developing his own electorate.
