MORESBY South MP and Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko is urging people in his electorate to build units on their land and rent them out to the public.
Tkatchenko said this at Koke on Wednesday when presenting a cheque for K75,000 to the East Port Moresby Circuit for the renovation of its mission house.
He said getting into the real estate industry would help support them financially, especially the churches.
“You have a huge piece of land here at Koke. Why don’t you develop it. Build units so that you can rent them out and bring in money to support your church programmes,” he said.
“So much can be done for the churches. Partnering with the Government and private sector is the way to go.”
The funding brings a total of K2.5 million which Tkatchenko has given out to churches over the last three years from the Moresby South’s district services improvement project (DSIP) funds.
In 2014, Tkatchenko gave K150,000 to the United Church regional synod and the women’s fellowship triennial conference. He presented K40,000 for the extension of the Mahuru United Church.
Last year, he donated K200,000 to Kesi United Church and K150,000 to all mainline churches totalling 34 congregations to purchase gifts for the pastors and their families.
This year, Tkatcheno donated K200,000 for the new Evegima United Church building and presented K1.5 million to the Pari United Church for a new church building.
He said Government would always help churches,  and urged them self-reliant then government assistance would only be an additional bonus.
