NORTHERN Governor Gary Juffa has called for a review of the law and justice system in the country.

He said the system needed to be revamped to adequately provide the justice that many so anxiously craved for but were not getting.

“Vigilante-type behaviour and reprisals and destruction of property or even innocents being harmed in society will be a certainty if justice is not seen to be done,” he said.

“Right now the case turnover is terrible and many cases are never heard and people become frustrated and take the law into their own hands.

“Criminals are walking away and often committing more serious offences because they are all allowed bail and this is causing bitterness and outrage and violent behavior in society.”

He urged the enforcement and prosecution agencies to be overhauled and rebuilt with credible people to lead them and best practice established to ensure cases were vigorously pursued, successfully investigated and effectively prosecuted.

Juffa also called for an overhaul of the prison system to improve the tracking and monitoring of criminals.

“In our tribal culture, crime was viewed harshly and the perpetrators were unpopular and severely penalised.”
