A CABINET minister wants his office moved out of the 2-Mile area in Port Moresby after he was almost shot there last Thursday.
Minister for Mining Johnson Tuke said he was returning from a cabinet meeting at around 7pm when he came across criminals armed with guns and bush knives at the Pruth Street roundabout.
In a statement, he said divine intervention and his quick response in the face of danger saved him from being killed by criminals who shot at him when he was making his way back to the office.
Tuke said he was taken by surprise when four men suddenly turned on him as he was driving into the street at the roundabout in front of YWCA Hostel at 2-Mile Hill.
“I was just returning to pick up my bag and some documents from the office and I saw these four men.
“I thought they were just some drunkards walking on the road but as I drove closer, I realised that two of them had factory-made guns and the other two had bush-knives,” he said.
“Everything just happened so fast and as the gunmen pointed towards me, I quickly reversed the vehicle which caused the front to lift and, at this point, the shot that was aimed at my head missed me and, instead, went right through the front right headlights.
“You know I grew up in Port Moresby and I know all the settlements here, having also lived at Morata settlement.
“I know 2-Mile Hill settlement is very notorious.”
Tuke urged Government to relocate him and his staff to a new location in the city as his officers had experienced similar incidents.
