A credit scheme worth K3 million has been launched recently in Goroka, Eastern Highlands for locals to access loan services.

The deal was agreed under a partnership between the local MP Bire Kimisopa, Governor Julie Soso and the National Development Bank (NDB).

Kimisopa and Soso provided K1.5 million each towards the facility.

NDB managing director Moses Liu said the bank aimed to assist people through SMEs as it was a government initiative.

He urged the people of Goroka to get loans from the credit scheme and grow their economic activities.

Soso encouraged all leaders from the province to work together with the provincial government to deliver similar opportunities for the people.

Kimisopa said K3 million will be made available every year for the people of Goroka.

He said they would grow the facility to a minimum of K10 million and maximum of K250 million.

“The concept is to empower the people to go into SME and look after themselves,” he said.
