MPs commended for relocating islanders

Letters

On behalf of our people, I would like to commend and thank Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, East Sepik Governor Allan Bird, Minister for Inter-Government Relations Kevin Isifu, Disaster and the PNG Defence Force for their quick and prompt response to relocate our relatives and people on Kadovar, Ruprup and Biam Islands.
These islands and their people use the same kukurai (chieftaincy) system as those at the border with Madang.
I would like to thank O’Neill for committing K150,000 for emergency relief.
I would like to suggest that if monies do go through the East Sepik provincial government finance system, they should be monitored 24/7 lest they disappear. Disaster funds of K1 million allocated for Angoram in 2012 disappeared.
Some of the corrupt officials are still there within the system, and not one has been arrested as yet.
Briefly: Former Deputy Prime Minister and Inter-Government Relations Minister Sir Leo Dion approved K1 million to Angoram to help the worst-hit villages of Kambaramba and others in 2013.
The K1 million went through East Sepik finance division.
No relief supplies were ever given out. Not even one bottle of water, a tablet of medicine or mosquito net was given to any villager during that time in 2013
The monies simply disappeared.
I hope O’Neill and Bird take note of the concern I have raised.
