MPs should address violence

Letters

I AM really saddened and frustrated to have read in the paper on Tuesday about the killings of two Grade 12 students in two different provinces in our nation.
One in Northern was reportedly killed by criminals who were after his money and phone.
In another case in Hela, the student was allegedly killed by his own tribesmen.
It is sad that two young men, with dreams of the future, had their lives taken by selfish people with evil motives.
What is frustrating is that there seems to be an increase in violence and killings around the country at this time.
Can the MPs and governors of those provinces get off their backsides and do something about the escalating crime in their respective electorates and provinces?
Some people argue that it is not the job of MPs and governors to contain law and order problems in their electorates.
But I disagree with that statement.
It is the duty of the MPs and Governors to ensure that there is peace and order in the province in order for development to take place.
Without peace and order, any positive change will either be minimal or won’t occur at all.
In the same way parents are responsible for peace and order in their homes, MPs and governors are responsible for their electorates and provinces.
I have always blamed the MPs and governors of provinces for poor leadership where petty crimes and slashing of civilians on the streets are common, whether it is in Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen or any other town.
The police officers may be willing to do their duty but are usually under-resourced and you the MPs should step in and assist.
When the police travel out to rural areas, MPs responsible should supply the fuel and other incentives to help the local police officers to arrest those guilty and educate the people to stop violence and killings.
You can’t just sit back in your hometown or in Port Moresby and bark orders to people in your province, you should get there yourself and do something about it.
I have always blamed the MPs for the ongoing law and order problems in their electorates and I refuse to think otherwise.
You were mandated to take care of your electorate and that you should do so.
Containing law and order problems in your backyard is as important as making good speeches in parliament.
For the sake of innocent civilians, get up and do something to stop crime in your electorates.
