MPs should work together: LLG head
The National, Wednesday February 11th, 2015
THE nine MPs in Morobe have been urged to work together in providing service to the people.
Wain-Erap Local Level Government president Charlie Foike said in Nawaeb district the MPs must fund the LLGs to make up for the Government slashing K400,000 off their grant so they could provide much needed services to the rural people.
He said the provincial assembly (Sam Sewe) had resolved that the nine districts’ joint planning and budget priorities committees must allocate K400,000 to the LLGs to replace the funds deducted by the Government.
The LLG presidents last year received K500,000 each from the National Government.
But that has been cut to K100,000 this year. Foike said the LLG presidents had limited funding and were trying their best to deliver services to the people.
He said MPs must work together with the LLG presidents to promote development at the ward level.
Foike said it seemed some MPs looked at LLG presidents as a threat to their positions.
He said if they failed to serve the people, “time will catch up with us as Morobe is a big province with 33 LLGs, 556 council wards, nine districts, 10 MPs and 45 Tutumang cabinet members”.
“The governor, MPs, presidents and councillors want to see Morobe develop and change. But if we play politics, we will ruin the province.”
