THE inspectorate branch of the regulatory operations division of the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) is poised for an expansion this year.

The expansion would enable it to discharge its mandated responsibilities in a more effective manner.

Papua New Guinea’s chief inspector of Mines Mohan Singh (above) said there were 19 sanctioned positions in his branch, out of which only seven had been occupied.

In a recruitment drive undertaken last year, offers were made to seven new candidates who were expected to join the inspectorate this month.

He said hiring for the remaining vacancies would be re-started.

Singh said there were only seven sanctioned positions in 2009, which were gradually increased to 19 over these years to enable the state to discharge its legislated obligations under the Mining (Safety) Act and Regulation.
