THE law and order problems in Mt Hagen have been fixed and image of the city changed, according to police.

This is the result of a good working relationship between the Mt Hagen city rangers, Hagen Kona Kai, city authority and Mt Hagen police.

City rules enforcers no longer face resistance from the people, in particular, street vendors.

People are afraid to litter and dispose of rubbish in places provided.

Provincial police commander Supt Martin Lakari said people going to the city no longer move around in fear of being robbed or harassed.

Lakari said petty crimes on the street had dramatically declined after police assisted the city rules enforcers two months ago.

“When we address the problem of littering in the city, other petty crimes such as pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, armed robbery and others just disappeared,” he said.

He said police officers would continue to assist city the authority in maintaining cleanliness in the city and minimising petty crimes.

“I want to appeal to city residents and others coming into the city every day to respect the good image of the city now and dispose of your rubbish in the bins provided,” he said.
