Mt Hagen market in need of upgrade

Letters

The Mt Hagen market is one of the best in Papua New Guinea.
The market infrastructure was funded by the PNG Incentive Fund.
The abundance of fresh produce that are grown all year round by the farmers in the province due to the fertile soil are incomparable to that of other provinces.
The market supplies the entire city population, neighbouring Highlands provinces, Momase region and also Port Moresby.
Most small businesses operators who have contracts with the mining companies, the LNG and other exploration companies also purchase fruits and vegetables from the
market to supply these large companies.
The business activities (buying and selling) taking place at
the market any given day is massive.
The revenue that the market makes through the fees it collects from the vendor’s are also very significant yet the market infrastructure does show any form of maintenance.
The market needs an urgent attention.
Foremost is the non-existence of quality water supply.
The water to the market was disconnected about 12 years ago due to the failure of the markets management to pay its bills.
The vendors have been relying on rain water and the nearby creek to clean and freshen up their veggies since the water was disconnected.
Although the produce would look healthy they can be contaminated.
This practice is currently on going and is detrimental to the health of the population which depends on the market.
The market management also does not prioritise cleanliness and maintenance since the market was built.
The inside and the outer areas of the market are in dire need of proper maintenance.
Over flooding of the surface area during rainy period occurs due to clogged pipes and drainage which were not being regularly maintained.
The dirt and waste are then deposited inside the market area while vendor’s continues their daily activities.
On the fringes of the market the wear and tear is visible.
The soil has slowly covered most of the pavement and no refurbishment has taken place.
The market management needs to wake from their long sleep.
To the public who depends on the market please wash all veggies, fruits and other produce  properly prior to consumption.
