ELEVEN shops, offices and other properties worth more than K10million were gutted by fire at Suwara in Mt Hagen city on Friday.
An undisclosed sum of cash also went up in flames in the early-hours blaze but the cause of it is yet to be determined.
The shops located at the Muri Trading Compound next to the Mt Hagen Main Market were owned by Muri Trading Ltd and rented or leased. The destroyed shops included the Muri Wholesale, Muri Supermarket and its fast food outlets and seven other shops.
Managing director of Muri Trading Elizah Jacob Tiki described the destruction as “a big loss”
Tiki told The National that it was hard to believe that 11 shops were razed in less than an hour.
Tiki said he bought the properties and operated them for only six months before the destruction.
“I still do not know what actually happened but proper investigation will identify the cause of it,” he said.
