AN aquaculture project in Mumeng, Bulolo of Morobe province, is now supplying fingerlings to fish farmers and providing training.
The Mumeng Fish Marketing Ltd, set up last year and located at Paraklis village, Zenag, is also ready to export tilapia and the common carp.
Company manager Tom Bukwa said: “We have 11 huge fish ponds breeding tilapia and the common carp. The project is one of the largest in the Bulolo district.
“We are also in the initial stage of digging six more ponds because the demand in the local fish market was increasing.
“Apart from selling fish, we also ventured into supplying fingerlings and proving fish farming training.”
Mr Bukwa commended Bulolo MP Sam Basil for initiating the aquaculture programme with the Morobe Fisheries Auhtority that provided fish farming training for farmers.
“The many abandoned mines in the district have made inland fish farming commercially viable.
“The fish is also an alternative source of protein for the farmers and the people,” he said.
