A highly spirited Mungkas side outsmarted University Inter 2-0 in the Port Moresby Soccer Association premier men’s grand final at Bisini Park on Saturday.
It was a double celebration for Mungkas as their women also won their grand final.
After two seasons — 2015 and 2016 — with the city football competition Mungkas bagged the champions tag.
The match was all but sealed in the first 45 minutes with two goals from Abel Redenut and Elton Banem going on to the fulltime buzzer to wrap up the PMSA major honours in style.
Several yellow card warnings were issued to four players from Uni and three from Mungkas for careless conduct by Australian referee Jonathan Gray.
Mungkas’ Redenut, Banem, Philemon Eaka, were pushing and pressing tirelessly the opposition danger box but unable to find the net time and again.
University, with captain Sammy Camebell, Zaggen Nalu, Gabi Yanum, Kila Tinou and John Ray, worked hard but their efforts were denied by a solid defence from the opposition in the entire match.
It was frustrating for the scholars as their attempts at goal were repeatedly foiled and they were beaten by the better team on the day.
Mungkas were presented the PMSA premier men’s shield and K3000 and University settled for K2000 and the runner up trophy.
PMSA executives headed by president John Wesley Gonjuan had agreed to provide such cash incentives to all grand finalists and third placed teams.
Cash prizes amounting to K47,000 were dished out for this season.
