MUNGKAS were crowned champions of the national men’s club championship on Sunday after defeating Morobe’s City United FC 1-0 in the final at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium on Sunday.
The defending premiers of the Port Moresby Soccer Association were met with some steep competition from City United, who started the match on the front foot in attack through Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League pair Jacob Sabua and Alex Kamen.
The pair were backed up by Valentine Nelson and Dinnie Luaine, who formed a brick wall in defence.
A more composed Mungkas outfit were patient in their game plan with skipper Abel Redenut and fellow defenders Richard Yongi and Junior Kaprangi thwarting numerous attempts on goal in the opening half.
A break in United’s right flank saw Mungkas deliver arguably one of the best (and the only of the match) goals of the tournament.
A cross from the right edge found its way to forward Robert Kenake who brought the ball under control using his chest before delivering the winning strike to put Mungkas ahead before halftime.
Mungkas’ midfield stood their ground following a more physically-charged United outfit in a second half.
The visitors tried to outmuscle Mungkas, however, time was not on their side as the home side held on for the win.
Redenut was name the player of the tournament while teammate Philemon Eaka bagged the golden boot.
