MENDI Muruks forward Warren Glare says he was happy to see the flair of the Digicel Cup side revived last season.
The 25-year-old hooker-back rower told The National on Thursday that Muruks were once a glamour team in the Papua New Guinea inter-city competition.
However, he said the side had been performing way below its standards until recently when club veteran Roderick Puname took over as head coach.
“Discipline is the key in any sports and I can say the Muruks team has been well disciplined under coach Roderick Puname in 2021,” the former SP Hunter forward said.
“The results showed that we finished well in the top two out of 12 teams and that is because of discipline.
“I think credit goes back to the coach for instilling that in the side. Muruks teams have been missing good direction in the past seasons which resulted in the side missing the finals for consecutive seasons,” Glare, who started his Digicel Cup career at the Lae Tigers, said.
“The club has a rich history but it has been struggling for a long time and not performing to the standards set by our former players.
“But I believe that flair that was missing returned in 2021 under Puname.
“I am excited and looking forward to contributing as a player in season 2022.”
Glare said he wished to see the Petroleum Resource Kutubu-sponsored side go one better compared to last year where they made it as far as the preliminary final.
“In the last season, we played consistent and we finished the regular season well,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we were knocked out in the preliminary final.
“But personally, I really want us to do better and make the grand final this year.
“I am sure the rest of my teammates share the same ambition as me.”
Glare said he looked forward to joining the team for the pre-season which starts at the end of next month.
