Museum runs kid’s quiz

ENHANCING words and vocabulary is what the National Museum & Art Gallery is doing to promote learning for lower and upper school students.

In line with the National Museum & Art Gallery will be conducting its first term school holiday programme “spell@muse” starting today (April 15) right through to next Friday (April 19).

‘Spell@muse’ is a spelling bee competition between Grades 5-8 students from Eki Vaki, June Valley, Ororo and Wardstrip primary schools.

Director Dr Andrew Moutu said as a trial, only four government schools in the National Capital District have been invited to take part.

“Based on the outcome, we will work towards involving more schools,” he said.

He added that the National Museum is assisting the National Education curriculum for literacy and this is one way of promoting learning.

A wide range of words has been selected from general everyday use to those that come with the difference sciences of the museum – history, anthropology, biology, archeology and conservation.

“The idea is to get some interest around the sciences that should be fun and entertaining for the students and getting the kids involved during the school holiday is what we are doing,” Moutu said. 

Today is registration at 9am and orientation and competition starts tomorrow.

The National Museum & Art Gallery is a place not only for the past, but for our present and future generations. 

It houses the cultural and natural heritage of Papua New Guinea.

The main Papua New Guinea museum at Waigani, Port Moresby in NCD consists of five display galleries which are the Masterpiece Gallery, the Independence Gallery, the Sir Allan Mann Gallery (for temporary exhibits), Life and Land (natural history and prehistory) Gallery and the Sir Michael Somare (new acquisitions) Gallery.
