Mushroom has different benefits: Kombuk

MUSHROOM cultivation has potential to improve livelihoods through economic, nutritional and medicinal contributions, an official says.
Department of Agriculture and Livestock secretary Daniel Kombuk said this when harvesting mushrooms in his backyard recently.
Kombuk said he became interested in growing mushrooms after watching a demonstration carried out by the Juncao Technology initiative in Eastern Highlands during the launch of the project last year. Kombuk said he was excited by his harvest because mushrooms required much land and could be grown by rural farmers in addition to their other crops and was a healthy food.
“A lot of people don’t realise how easy it is to grow mushrooms,” he said.
“You’re able to grow mushrooms in places you wouldn’t be able to grow plants, in shady spots, under a surface or porch,” Kombuk explained.
Kombuk said in the case of income and improved nutrition, successful cultivation and trade in mushrooms could supplement incomes.
The Juncao Technology initiatives are here to help PNG people especially in rural areas to shake off poverty as the climate conditions in PNG are suitable for local households growing mushrooms and for market.
The Chinese Juncao project supports the sustainable development goals of the country in promoting economic growth, poverty alleviation and protection of environment.
