GOVERNMENT hand-outs do not normally last long if they are given to people to use but a 12-year-old school truck belonging to Lipek Primary School is an exception.
The three-and-a-half-tonne truck was given to school by former and late Namatanai MP Ephraim Apelis in June 1999.
Now 12 years and four months later, it is still being used – thanks to the school board of management, parents and citizens who have taken good care of it.
This was stated at the opening of a new teacher’s house for the Himau Elementary School in ward 17 of the Namatanai LLG on Sept 15.
The truck was used to ferry people to and from the opening.
Namatanai MP and Mining Minister Byron Chan said he would give a new truck to the school as soon as Ela Motors could supply one.
Namatanai district education officer Norbert Bulumaris urged the people to look after school property in the same way as the truck was taken care of.
