THE National Airports Corporation (NAC) is stepping up security at airports around the country to ensure smooth operation over Christmas and New Year.
NAC acting managing director and chief executive officer Rex Kiponge said such busy periods had their challenges.
“We need to secure our airports, a lot of activities take place during the Christmas festive period, one of which is the increase in the passenger movement and so many people are concentrated in the terminal, there is social disorder and all these things are possible,” he said.
“Disturbances are common so we want a secure environment for our travelling public; this is normal operations.
“We want to maintain our terminals when there is increase in the passenger movement.
“The chances of people misbehaving, bringing in illicit drugs and drunken behaviour sometimes happen.
“NAC’s core business is safety and security.
“We will be rolling this out to our other regional airports as well, leading to the elections, both police and NAC with our existing securities will work together into the elections.”
