THE National Airports Corporation (NAC) says work is being carried out at the Jackson Airport’s domestic terminal in Port Moresby to improve its services.
Acting managing director Rex Kiponge said the work included the replacement of the existing baggage conveyor belt system and the relocation of the two baggage screening X-Ray machines from the terminal entrance to the back-of-house to allow bags and other items to be screened after they have been checked-in.
“Work has started on Monday and is anticipated to be completed in January 2022,” Kiponge said.
“Once completed, these will provide a more efficient and reliable system for processing passenger movement and their baggage transfers.
“The relocation of the two X-ray screening machines will remove the current need for long queues at the terminal entrance.”
Meanwhile, work on the upgrading of the air conditioning system that provides cooling to the main departure concourse is also underway.
“The work involves replacing the existing horizontal packaged units which have become obsolete and installing new units to restore air conditioning to the departure check-in area.”
Kiponge said while the work was underway, temporary fan units had been installed at selected locations at the departure concourse to provide temporary relief to the travelling public.
“NAC anticipates the completion of this work towards the end of December. This is in consideration of several factors, including the manufacture of units in Australia, lead time, freight and the current Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation.”
