OPPOSITION Leader Belden Namah is disappointed with the conduct of police and soldiers during the State of Emergency and wants Controller David Manning to issue directives to them and end the curfew.
Namah said yesterday the current situation which the Government had imposed was a public health concern and not a law and order issue.
“Around the country police are taking advantage of the SOE to mistreat our people and wreaking havoc on our communities,” Namah said.
“Police should not be using or carrying high-powered guns.
“Innocent people are being intimidated and their properties raided and police are demanding bribes at designated roadblocks.
“We cannot use the SOE to suppress the right of our people.
“If villagers are caught with betel nuts, they should be turned back with their betel nuts and not confiscate them because some police officers are stealing betel nut from traders.”
Namah claimed that Prime Minister James Marape, Police Minster Bryan Kramer, Health Minister Jelta Wong and Police Comm Manning had not been doing anything practical to control the unlawful activities carried out by police and task force members.
Namah wants Manning to warn to police personnel to operate within the law.
Any member of the force breaches this code of conduct should be penalised and terminated from the force, he said.

  • Thank you Opposition Leader, but keep up the good work and work alongside our PM. be the voice of the marginalized

    • Well done namah you’re the leader who consent about the country and the people of Papua new Guinea

  • Opposition Leader is correct! Police and Army are using excessive force! There is absolutely no need for the SOE Task Force to go around carry high powered rifles unless patrolling our border posts. SOE Controller and Task Force have definitely over-stepped their boundaries. PM needs to step in and take control of the situation immediately. Too many reports of police taking advantage of the situation and doing criminal activities!

  • The Police force is creating fear and uncertainty in our societies because of their ill-disciplined conducts. When we see or hear the name ” Police”, conclusions are already drown. The government and the Constabulary has to make some painful decisions and if it means to axe the rotten apples, do so. Appreciate the voice from the Opposition Leader.

  • The opposition leader Hon. Belden Namah is really passionate and carrying out his duty as an opposition leader. He is the one who fights against the government for the betterment of our country. I’ve seen most people defame Hon. Belden Namah on social media but that should not be done. He is doing a fine job where it keeps a balance on our country.

  • Yes thank you Opposition Leader you have valid point how you feel for your people of Papua New Guinea. I have seen this kind of treatment is selfish and arrogant and not fair. These so called Law enforcer’s are getting away with this behavior of mistreating people and their families are benefiting big time instead of confiscating especially the betel nuts.

  • Not only the police and soldiers but securities as well. Some understanding have to be instilled in our law enforcers. The SOE is not about checking or stopping vehicles from parking or running on roads, but rather to facilitate safe movement and uphold orders from the PM and SOE response team.

  • Thank you Opposition Leader Hon. Belden Namah.
Since the SOE police personels have been mistreating the general public. So many properties are being damaged and Betel Nut bags confiscated are not given back but are then sold by Police personels’ immediate family members and wantoks.
The Forces are to do public awareness on the pandemic rather than using physical force.

Just sharing my view on the current scenario.

  • B Namah stands all right. Opposition position he occupied is his responsibility and let him play the opposition role. Some of you says negetive towards him doesn’t understand the opposition role. Namah knows the way.

  • There was a Bribery case involving a coaster bus and police conducting roadblocks in Kainantu and Kasam pass. The bus was overloaded with passengers (not following the SOE restriction of 15 people/25 seater) with my relative making up the number. Paid some money to the police to allow the loaded bus to pass through the check point, risking lives of all on board.

What a frail kind of policing by weak individuals in the police force.

  • Right Hon. Belden Nama, ,,,, you are very right,,,,, that’s very true,,,, we citizens of PNG are treated like we are in North Korea or communist country

  • SOE: The curfew is put into place to restrict the people’s movement from spreading the covid-19 or contracting this infectious virus.
    – People Carry and spread the virus, the virus is not airborne.
However, the police should not take advantage of the SOE and mistreat the people.
They should follow the protocol that is put into place by the SOE Controller.
The Team Leaders (PPC) of each Province should take full responsibility and check on the Police personal involved in the SOE operations on daily basis.
There shouldn’t be any excuses, good communication is Paramount during this challenging time.

  • Well done BN.
Government needs to clamp down on this sort of attitude and behaviour.
Disobedience has its consequencies – ones found proven guilty give term 12 months jail sentence and terminate thereafter. No one is above the law. There’s been too much talk on discipline without any action. Time is now and this is the moment of truth as well.

  • It’s very intimidating when police and soldiers chasing men and women at curfew night shockingly and into your premises as escape route when you are with your family in the night at your own and then tell you to lock up or stay indoors.
Where’s our freedom when we are already at our home area at during curfew time!!??
Welldone Namah keep up the good work hearing the people real concerns with this whole SOE situation.

  • Hon BN is one of the best opposition leader in the country. He is correct, BUT it’s ourselves asking police and armies to do that, we have attitude problem so we have to deserve it. HAREM TOK, HAREM TOK, HAREM TOK. If we listen and follow orders from the government then such behaviors from officers would’t exist. When are we going to listen and learn? Eg: taim ol tok lockdown em yu mas sacrifice na stap lo haus, go lo garden nambat, instead painim money raun lo olgeta hap smuggle of buais and other illegal activities. Em umi yet askim so larem ol mekim nambaut lo yumi. Disla no nap lo kamap taim umi HAREM TOK YA.

  • YES with you…Belden
but if you drive around POM, it looks much cleaner with no betelnut stains, not in favour of the blue boys, but just a thought

  • Harim tok na bihainim na bai yu stap gut…Police and Army are just like us. We all have no care attitudes.
