PARLIAMENT has passed a motion for the immediate arrest of former Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd managing director Dr John Mua.
The motion was moved by Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah after a statement to parliament by Public Enterprises Minister Sir Mekere Morauta on a K100 million MVIL investment in Australia.
In yet another twist of events, the MVIL office on Kunai Street, Port Moresby, was visited by Australian investigators and agents accompanied by Independent Public Business Corporation officers seeking to question a manager involved in the negotiations and transfers of money as well as
Mua.
MVIL chairman Bonny Igime confirmed the presence of Australian investigators in the office.
He said Australia was a separate jurisdiction and the MVIL had no say over how and when they conducted their own investigations.
“If Australian laws are violated, then it is entirely up to Australian authorities to address the issue,” he said.
Sir Mekere told parliament that the K100 million was public money that should be used for the benefit of Papua New Guineans but it had been wasted, “lost through incompetence, or in some cases, simply stolen”.
He said MVIL had a vital function within government and, as the third party motor vehicle insurer, it must maintain large financial reserves in order to pay out insurance claims for years into the future.
