MOROBE law and order committee chairman Peter Namus yesterday strongly condemned the brutal killing of a woman in Lae, Morobe, last Friday.

Namus who knew the victim and her family personally said the people who killed the young mother were “sick in the brain”.

“Her (victim’s) father is a ward councillor in my LLG and is known for upholding the law,” Namus, who is also the president of the Wampar LLG, said.

“I will work with police to have the suspects brought before the law.”

Maria Drua, 20, from Yandera, Bundi, was mercilessly slashed to death on Friday by some suspects.

Namus said crime in Lae is a long standing issue and what happened to the victim was a result of many factors that have compounded over time.

He said while the provincial administration was trying to address ethnic clashes in the city, crime had drastically increased on the other hand affecting businesses and communities.

“The Vagrancy Act must be reintroduced because people who create problems are mostly the ones who.

“They came to stay with wantoks temporarily and have no permanent jobs or place of residence,” Namus said.

He said police powers must be decentralised and given to each provincial governments so that they created their policing structures and funded their operations to address crime.

“I take this time to appeal to escapees still on the run to surrender to authorities as their lives are in danger,” Namus said.

He urged people not to habour escapees saying they would be in big trouble if the law caught up with them.
