LENA Napmuku, a mother of five, has been providing some essential healthcare services to mothers and babies over the past 31 years.
In 2019, Napmuku completed a bachelor of midwifery at the Lutheran School of Nursing supported by Newcrest PNG under the partnership with Australia Awards PNG.
Now, with her qualification, she is in charge of the labour ward at the Sandaun Hospital.
“I mentor younger midwives and manage trainee community health workers and resident health extension officers,” Napmuku said.
“We’re managing patients and teaching at the same time to help junior officers master how to manage cases.”
Napmuku is one of more than 40 nurses and midwives trained under the partnership with Newcrest who are contributing to improving maternal healthcare in PNG.
