MOROBE Governor Kelly Naru used the World Malaria Day yesterday to present K50,000 to kick-start fundraising for the 49th Medical Symposium focused on malaria and its control.

“Malaria is a deadly serious issue and we must all join hands to fight it. Bring out all the cheque books and let’s put money to the cause,” he announced.

Naru and Lae MP  Loujaya Toni made a commitment towards the symposium during the fundraising launch two weeks ago.

“Today marks the beginning of real money coming in for the symposium,” Angau Memorial Hospital chief executive and fundraising chairman Dr Polapoi Chalau said.

Members of the fundraising committees said that Naru’s contribution totalled K60,600 for the symposium.

“We urge all who have pledged during the fundraising launch night to take Governor Naru’s lead and start coming in with your contributions,” Chalau said.

Naru also presented K25,000 to the Yoanggeng parish in Silimana, Finschhafen, to honour his commitment to it 100-year celebrations.

Coordinator Simon Shong likened  Naru to his predecessor, saying he was carrying on the good work of looking after churches.

“You are the second recipient of our grants under the Morobe provincial government’s 10% allocation from the province’s internal revenue,” Naru said.
