Naru: No threats, follow procedures

MOROBE Governor Kelly Naru has urged trade union leaders to stop issuing threats to disrupt public services when calling on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to step down from office.
Naru was responding to a move by a few union leaders to force O’Neill to step down over corruption allegations.
Naru said while he did not support the Government or Opposition, he called on aggrieved parties to follow proper processes in raising their grievances.
“We have had cases of disturbances, upheavals, turbulence, death and destruction over recent weeks and people all over the country are now crying for peace and normalcy to return,” Naru said.
“We don’t want another round of chaos, destruction and upheaval that will destroy the lives of our people.”
Naru said what lawyer Moses Murray and pilot James Makop and their supporters were pushing for was a matter already before the courts. It is the same matter propagated by the university students resulting in bloodshed and violence at three universities in the country, he said.
“What we are seeing now is these professionals in unions are advocating the same issues that the students and civil society groups have advocated,” Naru said.
Naru said though unions have the right to advocate on issues of national importance, they must do it rationally and not by using threats, ultimatums and unrest.
“They must not use unlawful means to disrupt essential services to achieve their purpose,” he said.
