MOROBE Governor Kelly Naru has urged the Ahi Council of Women (ACW) in Lae not to sit back as spectators but form a cooperative society and venture into business activities.

Naru was speaking during the presentation of K5600 cheque, the first portion of K10,600 pledged to ACW last August.

“Ahi women cannot sit back as spectators watching foreigners invade to take over land and feed from it. The more we sit and watch, chances will passby,” Naru said.

“It is challenging to 17 Ahi wards that the expansion of the city is pushing Ahi people to the extreme not knowing what to do to support their families as the land is being taken over by businesses and settlements.”

The provincial government was was aware of the challenge and tried to assist locals form cooperative societies both in urban and districts to participate in business opportunities as the city grows.

Naru called on the locals to change the trend and keep with changes taking place.  He told the women to be involved in small to medium entrepreneurial (SME) activities. He assured that the provincial government would allocate them a PMV bus as promised.

This was in anticipation of the expansion of the Lae to Situm and along the highway to Nadzab which would provide various business opportunities.

Naru said the women would also be trained and educated on how to manage their finances in their cooperative group.

The cooperative group would be the catalyst of business activities which would have 20,943 members.
