National census

Letters

THE Government is wasting money to engage the National Populations and Housing Census to carry out National census.
This year the budget is K100 million.
This amount will not bring back the exact figures to the Government and meet its poor expectation.
The population will be miscalculated due to many factors.
If accurate figure is required for effective delivery of service, the responsibility should be given to the local councillors through the local level government.
The councillors should take the data by recording the names of each people in the community with their age. And the data collected will be free while accurate and without any due cost.
After six months and twice per year, the list should be updated with the LLG presidents and presented to the MPs.
When doing so, it becomes a tradition for the councillors.
If the Government uses the census officers, it will drain the Government terribly.
Every term when the government wants to carryout census it will still cost them a lot and leakages will rise.
Using councillors will save them a lot.

  • Census is a very important tool that provides data that is used in order to properly plan development. Provincial Governments need the census data as a benchmark to request government grants and allocations. People must be counted once and has to be carried at a single day and place which has been approved by NEC as the 12th of July 2020.

It is therefore important that Census must be carried out once and in PNG, it is every 10 years. It is worth the money spend and we should all look to the brighter side of data collection and information, which forms the basis for informed decision making at all levels of government and private investments and development.
