NATIONAL Forensic Science services needed direct funding from the government to help fight crime in the country, Detective Supt Philip Rambaliku says.
Rambaliku said when the funding went to the police department and broken down to each sector, forensic received a small amount.
He said since it was a scientific area, direct funding was appropriate.
“I want direct funding from the government so that we can serve the people properly,” he said.
“This is a government service and we want to provide the quality that people want.
“I am happy with the government’s plan to provide funds directly to the district level.
“The same principle  must be applied to the department so each sector can get direct funding.”
Rambaliku said scientific equipment was expensive and important in fighting crime.
“The police department did not see the importance of forensic science,” he said.
He said the finger print office responsible for doing character checks was closed in September and there were complaints by people who required clearance checks.
“We need about K2 million for an annual operation,” Rambaliku said.
