National trials on as pick boxers for Apia

THE Papua New Guinea Amateur Boxing Union (PNGABU) will conduct their final selection trials for the 2019 Pacific Games at Lamana Hotel, Port Moresby, from Wednesday to Friday.
In an executive meeting held at Shady Rest Hotel, Port Moresby, on Wednesday, PNGBU secretary general Dr Gideon Kendino urged all boxers selected to be at their best to have a chance to make the Apia Games later this year.
He said the date was initially set to run in conjunction with the national boxing championship but has now been downgraded to the national selection trials due to the fact that the host NCD Boxing Association could not stage the national championships because of a lack of funding.
The championships have since been deferred to later in the year.
He urged all member associations who had raised their funds to come to Port Moresby to set it aside for the championships.
Kendino said it was a must for a selection trial as PNGABU must meet the deadline set by the PNG Olympic Committee for all the names to be submitted to their office by the end of the month. Failure to do so would mean the boxing team would not travel to Samoa.
Kendino said the PNGBU selection committee selected the squad based on the ring craft/skills, discipline and past performance including the 2017 boxing championships in Arawa and the last PNG Games in Kimbe
The squad was approved by executive meeting last week.
Dr Kendino urged boxers and their associations to contact PNGABU tournament director and chairman of Selectors Dick Larry on 76529630 or Kendino on 72955944 or email [email protected]
The PNGABU thanked Lamana Hotel for their continued support by allowing boxing to use its facilities for the upcoming selection trials.
