Nationalism versus regionalism

Letters

PAPUA New Guinea’s political independence will be 43 years old on Sunday.
The intensity and excitement in celebrating the special day is gradually diminishing.
One or two have complained about people, especially students, celebrating their provincial days in Port Moresby.
They argue that this is creating provincialism and regionalism, and independence should be celebrated more to promote nationalism.
We are all citizens of this country and are happy that we have been freed from our colonial masters.
The question everyone should be asking is what is there after 43 years for us to celebrate as a people?
This country is crippled by corruption and we all know this. Many things are not right.
If you have a good reason to celebrate, then do so and enjoy. Some of us are worried, uncertain, broke, and sick, robbed, etc, and are not in the mood.
Nothing much happens at the national level so people are going back to their roots. This is the reason why provincial day celebrations are gaining momentum. It won’t be long before we have district day celebrations and eventually family days.
