THE Port Moresby Nature Park has been given full accreditation by the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia to be considered as a top wildlife conservation and preservation centre.
The announcement was made yesterday at a plaque unveiling ceremony, attended by stakeholders and sponsors of the park.
World Association Zoos and Aquariums president and chief executive officer for Zoos Victoria Dr Jenny Gray said the wildlife of PNG was incredible, and described the park as one of the best facilities.
“Many people out there in the world would ask the question, what is a good zoo? And here in Port Moresby, there is a good zoo, so the accreditation promotes a very good zoo,” she said.
Gray said it was not easy to produce a good zoo. It was a difficult task.
The accreditation process requires that a park have world class system.
“You have all the systems and procedures in a way that you deal with your staff, your environment, your waste management and how we look after our animals,” she said.
Gray said the Australian accreditation system was the best in the world, it was better than the American and European systems.
“Port Moresby acquiring an Australian accreditation system, you have now passed the hardest one in the world and that is an incredible achievement,” she said.
