THE Port Moresby Nature Park is looking for sponsors for its three aviaries being built to house cockatoos and other parrot species.
General manager Michelle McGeorge said the birds were not able to be displayed after the old aviary was demolished two years ago.
Because of the cockatoo’s social nature of interaction and engagement with humans, the new aviary would benefit them.
A parrot conservation aviary opened yesterda. It is sponsored by Paga Hill Estate for K35,000.
Chief executive officer Gudmundur Fridriksson said they were happy to support Nature Park.
He said the park added to the beauty of the city and was an important community asset.
Paga Hill helped build a parrot facility in 2016, and another one this year.
“It is really wonderful to have an organisation such as Paga Hill supporting the park in our programmes.
“This means that we can build better facilities for Port Moresby and the community,” McGeorge said.
Two of the new aviaries under construction will used to display different species of parrots.
The third will be used to rehabilitate and house rescued birds.
“The third aviary is basically for birds that we might be able to rescue and put back into the wild,” McGeorge said.
“This is to provide an area for them to stretch their wings particularly those who have an injury to their wings or they might be young and might not know how to fly.”
