Nawaeb looks at tourism options

A SURVEY needs to be conducted into the possibility of attracting tourists in the Nawaeb district of Morobe, chief executive James Neapukali says.
Neapukali said the district had the potential to venture into tourism but proper reports and identification of possible tourist attractions were some of the things that needed to be established.
“There is also a need for awareness to be carried out for people to take ownership and make sure the trade is successful in the district,” he said.
Neapukali said the district needed to address law and order quickly.
“When law and order is there, any development that comes into the district will achieve its full potential,” he said.
Neapukali said there were positives that the trade could be further developed so that local people would benefit from it.
He said at the district level there was no-one responsible to coordinate tourism and that meant it was up to the provincial level to take the lead in making sure the trade took its potentials to the people.
Meanwhile, Neapukali also assured the people of Nawaeb that the commitments made earlier last month to subsidise transportation fees were still there.
“We are further delayed because funds from the national level were not yet distributed to the district.”
“The release of district support improvement programme (DSIP) funds is yet to be made.”
“As soon as the funds come in, we will engage North Coast Aviation in the exercise. At the moment bags of coffee are still at the Baindoang airstrip waiting to be airlifted to Lae via Nazab.”
