TWO sporting teams carrying the name Port Moresby were proud recipients of K250,000 sponsorship from the City municipal government, the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) yesterday.

Soccer’s FC Port Moresby (K100,000) and rugby league, Port Moresby Vipers (K150,000) were given the handy support by NCD Governor Powes Parkop for their administration of their respective club this season.

When presenting the cheques, Governor Parkop said these two teams were the flagship of Port Moresby in their respective semi professional sporting competitions. FC Port Moresby takes part in semi-professional National Soccer League while Port Moresby Vipers – the Digicel Cup.

“Both teams are Port Moresby-based and they promote the values of what my government is promoting, to make Port Moresby City a better place to live and work in.

Parkop urged the Port Moresby City resident to change their mentality to support Port Moresby-based teams in these two semi-professional competitions.

“As a Governor of this City, I am proud to announce that NCDC is the co-sponsor of FC Port Moresby, we are franchising the team with the initial K50,000 and the another K50,000 will come before the enter the field against Hekari United on grand final day,” he said.

The chairman of FC Port Moresby and insurance broker, Richard Kassman thanked Parkop for honoring his commitment he made earlier this year.

FC Port Moresby also thanked other minor sponsors Graham Osborne who wasted no time pledging K50,000 for the club for next season.

SNS Port Moresby Vipers chairman Sudhir Guru also expressed same sentiments thanking Parkop for supporting the rugby league team. “Parkop initially invited City Pharmacy Ltd (CPL) – through its Stop N Shop – to support him to franchise Port Moresby Vipers, and we have been doing it for the last three years, going four this year,” Guru said.
