TEAM National Capital District (NCD) bagged five gold to finish first in the national boxing championships in Bulolo, Morobe, last weekend.
Bougainville finished second with three gold and Mekeo finished third with one gold.
Tournament director Dick Larry told The National yesterday that NCD had multiple representative boxers in John Ume, Allan Oaeke, Flora Loga and Jamie Chang who each won gold in their respective categories. He said a highlight of the two-day event was Bougainville heavyweight Fidelis Laia’s gold medal-winning performance.
“I was pleased with Fidelis, he really brought so much energy to the championships,” Larry said.
“He came from Bougainville with an aim to fight any of the national representatives from NCD.
“But unfortunately, the draws were different, so he didn’t get the chance to do that.
“However, he won gold in his category.
“But we will arrange for him to face a national boxers in our next event.”
Larry said the championships were successful. However, he said some boxing associations missed the event due to sponsorship issues.
“It was unfortunate to see a few associations miss out, but the event was entertaining for the people of Bulolo,” Larry said.
“Deputy Prime Minister and local MP Sam Basil officiated the championships on Friday.
“We completed the finals by Sunder afternoon. We would like to thank Zenag Chicken for providing catering for all the boxers during the event.
“MP Basil also supported all the visiting associations with accommodation.
“We also acknowledge our major sponsors, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee and National Gaming Control Board.”
Larry said the championships were a platform to promote boxing.
