A GROUP of National Capital District workers who graduated after a one-month pre-employment training has been urged to be honest and committed in their workplaces.

Urban Youth Employment Project (UYEP) manager Tom Gillis told the 215 graduates in industrial and business training to show those qualities in their workplaces.

The project is a government development initiative for youths in NCD. It aims to make a difference in the lives of young people by giving them the chance to undertake industrial and business pre-employment training.

The project gives them the chance to gain the skills and experience to realise their potential and prepare them for the workforce.

Gillis said most of them could not continue through the formal education system.

NCDC deputy city manager Honk Kiap said the project had helped many young people.

“Our education system has limited space so many people are thrown out on the street and the project creates a second chance for them.”

Paul Auru, 30, from Gulf is married with one child and was one of the graduates.

Auru said he came to Port Moresby and was unemployed when the UYEP gave him the opportunity to study pre-employment industrial training.

He said the training would help him find a job to support his family.

The UYEP has trained 1,000 people and some of them had secured fulltime employment will different companies.
