Team NCD weightlifters returned home to Port Moresby on Wednesday after a successful outing at the PNG Games in Kimbe.
The team of 13 lifters made up of eight males and five females managed to bag six gold medals, 11 silver and 11 bronze.
The stand out performers for Team NCD were triple gold medallists Frank Vairo in the men’s 77kg division and Bernadette Igo in the women’s 75kg division.
Team NCD weightlifting coach Gavera Morea told The National that the young team performed beyond expectation, as he commended his lifters on their dedication and commitment to training in the leadup to the Games.
“We did very well to win the medals that we did given the short training time caused by
the deferral of the Games two times.
Most of our team made up of students,” Morea said.
“We managed to call them together for about two months training before the Games. They did exceptionally well, and I am very impressed with the medals that the lifters have won.”
Morea also spoke of the promising future of the young team, saying that discipline and commitment to training would serve the lifters well if they wished to progress in the sport.
“We have lifters with a lot of potential given the ages from 13 to 24 years, they have a
bright future ahead in weightlifting.”
