NCD police prepare for Christmas operation, checkpoints set around city

POLICE will set up checkpoints at three roundabouts in Port Moresby from next Tuesday to inspect vehicles and check drivers’ licences.
National Capital District police officer in charge of traffic, Insp Joseph Salle, said other operations planned for the festive season had already started.
He told The National that three checkpoints would be set up.
They will be at the Erima roundabout, Badili roundabout and the National Research of Institute roundabout opposite the Port Moresby Nature Park and University of PNG, on Dec 24, 25 and 26.
They will be manned for 24 hours.
Police will be on the lookout for unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles, unlicenced drivers, overloading of buses.
Drinking and driving cases and speeding will also be check out.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said they were considering the effectiveness of the operations.
“We have road checks and spot checks everyday which has already started,” he said.
The major roadblocks will start next week.”
